How To Regulate Blood Sugar Levels By Wearing Diabetic Shoes

Diabetic shoes have a number of purposes but of them all their main intent is to protect the foot of a diabetic person from damage so that he or she can stay active and better mange blood sugar levels. As most people with diabetes know blood sugar levels are the most important thing to monitor and maintain in safe ranges.

Most diabetics check their glucose levels at least once a day if not more often because maintaining safe levels of blood sugar means they will have fewer complications in the future. Diabetic foot problems are common complications that diabetics encounter. When exercise and physical activity is so important to maintaining healthy blood sugar levels protecting your feet becomes even more important because an injured foot makes exercise that much more difficult.

So how do diabetic shoes actually protect the feet? They basically address two common areas of foot problems which are associated with diabetes. They protect the foot from the worsening of common injuries and they keep the foot’s circulation as high as possible. They do both of these better than traditional shoes due to the way they are designed and engineered.

Diabetic footwear usually fully covers the foot completely. They are made with materials which breathe and which are quite plush. This gives the foot an advantage in not experiencing damage due to cuts, scrapes, pressure points, or blisters. The breathable material also keeps the foot drier which means the skin is a bit more protected. Lastly shoes for diabetics tend to be wider and deeper so as to better fit the feet of many diabetics who often have deformed feet or who wear large shoe inserts or orthotics.

If you really consider how a diabetic shoe works you will note that they don’t actually stop injuries from occurring they simply make them less likely to be experienced. They also don’t heal injuries either. They are designed to promote healthy circulation in the feet so that the blood steam can heal wounds which occur naturally. Many diabetics have poor blood flow in their feet due to complications of diabetes and a shoe that doesn’t fit right will easily slow or stop blood flow to some areas of the foot.

A well fit diabetic shoe will be easy to adjust, easy to remove, and will be loose enough to let blood flow freely. This is often accomplished by oversizing the shoe and allowing for custom fit inserts but this is not a universal requirement. The end goal or the purpose of diabetic shoes is protecting the foot so that you can stay active and better manage your diabetes. This can help significantly in improving the quality of your life with the disease.
